Mountain Forests and Landscapes

Forestry and Environmental Sciences is a two-year second cycle degree (120 ECTS, equivalent to a Master of Science), in common with the Department of Biosciences and Territory. The programme is conceived for Bachelor graduates with a main interest in mountain forests and highland ecosystems; it is taught in Italian (curriculum Scienze e Tecnologie Forestali e Ambientali) and English (curriculum Mountain Forests and Landscapes, in joint venture with the University of Tuscia and in collaboration with EFI-MOUNTFOR – the European Forest Institute Project Centre on Mountain Forests). The programme is intended for national and international students from a variety of backgrounds, such as biology, agriculture, forestry and environmental sciences and geography. The programme has close links with international forest and environmental organizations, like FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and EFI (European Forest Institute).

The course is intended for highly-motivated national and international students and is conceived for Bachelor graduates with a main interest in responsible forest management and environmental governance in inland areas and mountain ranges. The study programme encompasses a wide array of subjects, including forests and climate change, conservation and management of biodiversity and other ecosystem services, sustainable forest management and operations, wood technology, natural hazard and pest management principles and techniques, forest economics and policy, soil conservation and geomorphology, agronomy and livestock systems in mountain areas. Forestry and Environmental Sciences is based on a multidisciplinary approach mixing theory and field practice. Teaching is based on class engagement, problem-solving approach and case study assessment. Lectures, seminars and independent learning are supported by field practices, laboratory work and outdoor excursions. The learning outcomes are oriented at educating forest professionals able to handle complex problems dealing with the three pillars of climate-smart forestry: adaptation, mitigation, and livelihood.

The programme is designed to meet occupational demands arising from the mountain regions, which are fragile systems, characterised by a high degree of diversity and complexity. The programme emphasizes the conservation of forest-dominated mountain landscapes to meet a defined set of ecological, economic and social criteria over long time frames. The interdisciplinary programme develops specialized knowledge and research skills, and it is also intended for professional forestry specialists and natural resource administrators. Postgraduates can find jobs in public administration, local development agencies, non-governmental organizations, park authorities, environment protection agencies, international organizations, and forest and timber enterprises, both in the EU and abroad. The programme is a stepping-stone for entering postgraduate research (PhD) in the fields of forest science.
